(For the days when your creativity feels distant but not gone)

Not every writing session needs to move a plot forward or build a world from scratch. Some days, the kindest thing you can do for yourself is to write softly. Here’s a list of light, nourishing writing projects to dip into when the big stuff feels too heavy.

Low-Pressure Writing Prompts

  • Write a scene where two characters say everything with their eyes and nothing with their words.

  • Describe a place you’ve never been but dream about often.

  • Imagine your character’s favorite meal and write it like a recipe. Or like one of those super obnoxious blog posts where they tell you the who, what, when, where and why of their favorite summer salad.

  • Let yourself ramble: "Today I feel like..." and go from there.

Character & Worldbuilding Mini Projects

  • Create a mood board for your protagonist using Pinterest or a collage app.

  • Write your character’s childhood memory in first person.

  • List ten small things your villain loves.

  • Design a holiday that exists in your world—and how it's celebrated.

Personal Reflection Meets Storytelling

  • Write a journal entry from your character’s perspective.

  • Pen a letter to your past self, or from your future self.

  • Turn a real conversation you had into a fictional one.

  • Try “emotional alchemy”: take how you feel right now and give it to a character in a wildly different context (sci-fi sadness, fantasy rage, etc).

Gentle Lists (Yes, these count as writing!)

  • Ten things your character keeps in their pockets or bag

  • Five lies your main character tells themselves

  • A playlist of songs that would break your villain’s heart

  • Your character’s comfort objects and why they matter

Things You Can Save for Later

  • Title ideas for future books

  • First lines that don’t belong to anything yet

  • Names you love and want to use someday

  • A single metaphor or sentence you’re proud of

Bonus: Non-Writing “Creative Proxies”

  • Voice memo yourself explaining a story idea

  • Create a playlist or aesthetic for a WIP

  • Doodle a map of your world

  • Organize your old notebooks or reread a favorite scene you wrote

  • Get really specific on Pinterest

Gentle writing is still writing.

These soft projects are meant to restore your connection to the page—no deadlines, no pressure, just you and your imagination with the volume turned down low.
