Writing Rituals - Setting the Mood

There’s something sacred about the space we create for writing. Whether it’s a corner of the couch or a dedicated desk by a window, the rituals we build around our writing time can become just as meaningful as the words themselves. In today’s post, I’m sharing how I create a cozy, intentional space that helps me dive into storytelling mode—every single time.

1. Lighting the Spark: Setting the Mood

Before I even open my laptop, I like to set the atmosphere. I light a candle or turn on warm fairy lights to signal to my brain: it's time to write. Some days, I’ll even brew a cup of herbal tea - peppermint is king - or play a soft instrumental playlist to create a gentle cocoon of focus.

Sometimes, before more intense scenes in my writing, I will listen to a little heavier of a playlist to fire me up.

Pro Tip: Create a “writing scent.” Pick a candle or essential oil you only use when you write. It conditions your mind to focus whenever it smells that scent.

2. The Writing Nest: Finding My Spot

I don’t always write at the same desk, but I do always tidy my space before writing. Clutter distracts me, so I keep a journal, my outline, and a drinky drink nearby—and not much else.

3. Rituals Over Routines

I’m not always able to write at the same time every day, but rituals are different. They're flexible, personal, and powerful. I often start with a free-write or journal entry, then open my story and read the last paragraph I wrote. That simple ritual of “warm up, then read” helps me jump back into the world.

4. Blocking Out the Noise

Even on busy days, I use tools like forest app timers, ambient sound websites, and my favorite playlist to shut out distractions. Sometimes, I even write longhand just to step away from the digital noise.

Resources I Love:

  • Noisli for ambient sounds

  • Focus Keeper for Pomodoro sessions

  • Lo-fi fantasy playlists on YouTube or Spotify

5. Ending With Gratitude

When I wrap up a writing session, I try to jot down a quick note: what went well, what I want to explore next time, and one sentence I liked from today’s work. It’s a small, powerful way to keep the creative fire lit.

I've found that when I don't take the time to reflect after I write, I tend to burnout easier in the long run. This act helps me stay grounded and improve personally before coming back to the writing desk.

Writing isn’t just about what you put on the page—it’s also about how you show up to the page. Creating simple rituals around your writing practice can turn even a 15-minute session into something grounding and joyful. Whether you write in pajamas or light a candle, what matters most is that it feels like your space to create.

What are your favorite writing rituals? I’d love to hear them in the comments!
